I was offered to work for an oil company at port Harcourt, Delta, River State, southwest Nigeria. Is it safe?

It is safe for the most part.. i would not venture out too far away though.. They just released some men they kidnapped off a drilling rig a few days ago...
I would choose a different place to go is what I recommend...

I travel/live there,speak some Yoruba,know most senior influentials,arms in the boot of my car,driver best friend,do not and never did and never will work for any oil company,never ever walk alone in places I do not know,never feel safe and wish I was born with eyes in the back of my head.

It's primarily the military potential of the US which prevents true nationalisation of oil for the good of the people. Nigeria is in fact (GDP) etc the most economically promising country in Africa south of the Sahara.
As far as Iraq goes the Baathist Party that took over after the revolution was moderate mildly socialist, and Muslim, but tolerant.
The country had the regions' best schools, hospitals and infrastructure but frustration with Big Oil paved the way for the demagogue Saddam as had the Treaty of Versailles paved the way for Hitler.

Poor you. Make sure you travel in the country ONLY in company cars. Make sure the compound that you stay in when ashore is secure - there may be armed guards. Do NOT walk around at night alone. Always travel with others and if you are going out for a night on the town don't flash the cash. I work for Baker Hughes...get a transfer out of Nigeria before you get there. It's no fun but it pays well for good reason. Too many uncertainties with the rebels and government, hostage takings etc. If you have a choice work in Balikpapan Indonesia or Singapore, and the women are awesome in the Far East. Oh yea, stay away from India, it smells REAL bad there. The Middle East?....go for Dubai only. Someone (named Ceasar's wife) had the nerve to compare Cape Town with the Niger Delta. Nucking Futs!!! They'd shoot you dead in South Africa for because of a Cellphone (let's not even talk about raping 6-month old babies... it only happens one place on earth... and it sure isn't Nigeria).
South Africa is one of the reasons why Nigerians can have hope... We look at J'burg and Capetown and say to ourselves ';at least we're not that dangerous!!!';
Matt if you do come to Nigeria, it's not as bad as they say... It's not all gravy...but there's danger everywhere... Statistics don't lie... Check 4 yourself! You're probably less likely to be captured in Nigeria than to be shot in most US cities, kidnapped in Mexico or killed in South Africa.
But my advice is to stick to deepwater jobs... Onshore locations are usually less safer!

It depends highly on the location of your work. Those stationed in the eastern states and on oil platforms are at a much higher risk than those pushing the papers in Lagos state or Abuja ( the Capital ).
And different oil companies vary much in their compensations and accomodations while you are here. So chose carefully. But it's not as bad as some might have you believe provided that you learn the local customs and don't go running around alone at night flashing money around etc.
and along with everything that the others have told you... here is some more good news for you:
If you do go there, please at least educate yourslef about the place, it's manifest problems and troubles before you go. Then you'll be ready for the bad things you see.

It depends highly on the location of your work. Those stationed in the eastern states and on oil platforms are at a much higher risk than those pushing the papers in Lagos state or Abuja ( the Capital ).
And different oil companies vary much in their compensations and accomodations while you are here. So chose carefully. But it's not as bad as some might have you believe provided that you learn the local customs and don't go running around alone at night flashing money around etc.

And instead of returning the income to the community from which it came, the profits are shipped back to US, meaning we everyday Americans enjoy the oil and our companies enjoy the profits. If you could let me know what kind of offers they give you, I should be able to tell you whether it's real or not real. In my experience and based on my knowledge, if you require to come out with any money upfront to get a job, it's most likey a scam. If need be, I can ask my client in Nigeria to find out for you whether it's a real deal. Or alternatively, you can contact nearby Nigerian Embassy for advice.

People drastically overrate the effects oil can have on a country's economy. A lot of the Arab countries have huge oil reserves and very small populations. They can become rich this way. In the cases of countries like Nigeria and Mexico, they have to divide that money up 100 million ways, which means that it can't contribute all that much to the per capita income. There are other issues, like corruption, etc., that make things even worse, but the fact is, that even in the absence of corruption, and even if the money were divided evenly, these people would not be wealthy.
Just look at the list of the wealthiest countries in the world. The only ones where oil revenues contribute substantially are Norway, Saudi Arabia, a few of the small gulf states and Canada. The rest are places with low levels of corruption and good educational systems, irrespective of their mineral resources.
Much wealth leaves the country with multinationals. There is of course some corruption and much of Nigerias revenue goes into paying for it's rather large army.
I all depends on the type of government in power and how they decide to spend their revenue as well. Look at Venezuela, they spend their oil revenue ';helping out friends';. Other countries spend their cash attracting more cash and building plush new cities, look at Saudi Arabia. No one factor can explain why Nigeria is still struggling.

suffer from the fear of death to frozen or hunger even though
the government does nothing for the people, just selling oil to abroad and taking money for only themselve?

Nigerians are notorious for internet scams. This has every indication of being an ';advance fee'; scam. The nigerians often make it seem that you are about to receive something of great value, but to get it you must pay some money up front. If you pay, they will come up with more fees you have to pay.
Ask yourself this one crucial question:
If you were an employer and you were willing to pay a huge salary like $18,200 a month, wouldn't you pay the $1,470 yourself to get your employee into the country?

The conflicts are more between Oil Corporations on one side and the local tribes on the other. Nothing has changed I m afraid, it is like a big cruel game, the Oil Companies exploit the local territory and the local tribes exploit the Oil giants with small episodes of violence, just to get some money out of them. Also, gas lines continue to be attacked, and Nigeria may suffer complete blackouts as these gas lines are used to provide energy to the hydro generating stations in the country. It would seem to get the locals onside, it might be a good idea to share the wealth and not poison their environment. It's a novel concept but might just work!
